Etali: The CDC Advisory Committee on Immunization voted unanimously to accept this recommendation.
Previously reported cases of blood clots with low platelet counts in J&J recipients. The highest reporting rate was among women under the age of 50.
The CDC said the incidence of such incidents is higher than previously estimated in both women and men, and at least nine people have died as a result of such blood clotting incidents in the United States.
CDC members also reported that J&J vaccine is less effective in preventing coronavirus than two other vaccines approved for use in the United States. At the same time, J&J vaccine chief Penny Heaton said the vaccine elicits a strong and lasting immune response in just one shot. In an environment where many do not return for a second dose or booster, the reliability of Johnson & Johnson’s single-dose vaccine as a primary regimen could be critical to saving lives, she said.
Of the more than 200 million fully vaccinated Americans, about 16 million have been vaccinated with J&J.
